I watched Kicking and Screaming today. And I watched some of the supplementary treats, including interviews and conversations with Noah Baumbach. He's a little Vassar-y and pompous. Maybe even fuckin OBNOXIOUS! I wonder if he will ever Google blogsearch himself and read this.
I'm partway through Granta's Best of Young American Novelists 2, and so far my favorite piece is Anthony Doerr's "Procreate, Generate". It's about a couple trying to get pregnant. At times his rhythm begins to seem contrived, but I can't imagine him writing another way. So it's mostly excellent. Here are some gems.
And nothing happens. Imogene cramps, finds blood, whispers into the phone, "I'm a fucking Swiss timepiece."
Imogene's bite of pumpkin pie turns to cement in her mouth.
'No parents, no husband, no children,' a blind woman once told her. Her gaze was a vacuum. Imogene did not know where to look. 'I am a tribe of one.'

My mother just phoned me to inform me that my distant cousins (the ones in the village in China) have begun a mass migration to Nigeria so that they can own or work in supermarkets. A small minority went to Argentina. So now she's trying to convince me to go back to Hong Kong/China for a week or two in July because I'll never be able to investigate these people again... if that's not fetishizing, then I don't know what is. SOOOO what do you think?? Thesis material??
